Am I a Candidate for a
Deep Plane Facelift?

You are asking the right question. Before considering a surgeon, a price, or a date — the first question should always be: is this procedure appropriate for me? This guide will help you understand the criteria; the definitive answer comes from a consultation with Dr. Huq.

The Ideal Candidate Profile

What the Best Candidates
Have in Common.

Moderate to significant facial aging

Visible jowling, deep nasolabial folds, midface descent, marionette lines, and a general heaviness that was not there five or ten years ago. If concerns are limited to fine lines or texture, a less invasive approach may suit better.

Typically 45 to 70

Most patients are 45–70, but candidacy is determined by anatomy and health, not a number. Some in their early 40s warrant a deep plane approach; some in their 70s are excellent candidates.

Good general health

A surgical procedure requires good general health for safe surgery and predictable healing. Conditions like uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, or bleeding disorders may need management first.

Non-smoker

Smoking constricts blood vessels and impairs healing. Dr. Huq requires patients to be non-smokers and prefers a minimum of two weeks smoke-free before surgery.

Realistic expectations

The goal is restoration — a natural, refreshed version of yourself — not perfection. Patients who understand this distinction tend to be the most satisfied.

A collaborative mindset

Dr. Huq takes time to understand your expectations and ensure alignment between your goals and the surgical plan. This is a clinical conversation, not a screening to reject patients.

Signs You May Be Ready

The Patterns Dr. Huq
Sees Again and Again.

Fillers and Botox are no longer delivering the results they once did — the maintenance feels exhausting and the results increasingly temporary. People ask if you are tired when you are not, because facial descent projects fatigue regardless of how rested you are.

You have noticed jowling or loss of jawline definition — a structural change that fillers cannot correct. And perhaps most telling: the reflection in the mirror no longer matches how you feel. You feel vibrant and engaged, but your face tells a different story. A deep plane facelift bridges that gap.

When a Different Procedure May Be Better

The Right Procedure,
Not Just a Procedure.

Dr. Huq is as committed to recommending the right procedure as he is to performing it well. Not every patient who inquires about a deep plane facelift needs one.

If your concerns are milder

For early to moderate aging — mild jowling, early lower-face laxity, a desire for visible improvement without the recovery of a full facelift — the Optimum LIFT (OML — mini facelift) may be the right starting point. It uses a shorter incision and a more targeted approach. It is not a lesser procedure — it is the appropriate procedure for faces that have not yet progressed to needing a full deep plane facelift.

If you are not yet ready for surgery

Some patients are in early stages where non-surgical options still produce meaningful results. Dermal fillers can restore lost volume; Profound RF can tighten skin and stimulate collagen. These are not substitutes for a facelift — they are appropriate interim measures.

If your primary concern is your neck

If your main concern is neck banding, a double chin, or loss of the jaw-to-neck angle — rather than midface aging — a standalone deep plane neck lift may be more appropriate. In many cases it is combined with a facelift, but this is determined by anatomy.

Candidacy FAQ
Is there a minimum or maximum age?

There is no strict age cutoff. Most patients are 45 to 70, but candidacy is based on anatomy and health. Patients in their early 40s with significant descent and patients in their 70s with excellent health have both been strong candidates.

Can I have a deep plane facelift if I have had fillers?

Yes. Fillers do not disqualify you. Dr. Huq may recommend allowing existing fillers to dissolve or metabolize before surgery, depending on the type and location. This is discussed during consultation.

What if I am overweight?

Patients should be at a stable, healthy weight. For some procedures, a BMI under 30 is required. Dr. Huq assesses each patient individually and will discuss this during your consultation.

What if I have had a previous facelift?

Approximately 10% of Dr. Huq’s cases are revisions of other surgeons’ work. A previous facelift does not disqualify you — in fact, it makes Dr. Huq’s experience with revision cases a significant advantage. Learn about revision facelifts.
