Cysts and lipomas are soft growths beneath the skin — cysts are fluid- or keratin-filled sacs, lipomas are benign fatty lumps. Moles are pigmented spots that are sometimes removed for cosmetic reasons or because they catch on clothing or jewelry. Skin tags are small, soft flaps of skin that commonly form around the neck, underarms, and eyelids.
None of these are cancerous, but many patients choose to have them removed for comfort, irritation, or appearance. A plastic surgeon can remove a benign lesion with careful attention to the resulting scar — particularly important for growths on the face or other visible areas.

Do I need a referral to see Dr. Huq?
Yes. A physician referral is required to see Dr. Huq for the removal of a benign lesion. Ask your family doctor or physician to send a referral to Niagara Plastic Surgery Centre.
Is benign lesion removal covered by OHIP?
No. The removal of benign moles, skin tags, lipomas, and cysts is considered an uninsured, cosmetic or elective service and is subject to a fee. Moles and skin tags start at $400 plus HST; cysts and lipomas start at $500 plus HST. Your exact quote is confirmed at consultation.
How do I know if my growth is benign or needs to be checked for cancer?
Dr. Huq will examine any growth before removal. If a lesion looks suspicious, it will be sent for pathology and the visit may be treated as a skin cancer assessment rather than an elective benign lesion removal.
Will removal leave a scar?
Any surgical removal leaves some scar, but a plastic surgeon’s training in wound closure is aimed at making the resulting scar as inconspicuous as possible — especially important for lesions on the face or other visible areas.
