Deep Plane vs Mini
Facelift

Which One Is Right for Where You Are

A deep plane facelift and a mini facelift are not competing procedures. They are different tools for different stages of aging. Choosing between them is not about getting more or settling for less — it is about matching the procedure to your anatomy.

If you are trying to decide which approach is right for you, this comparison will help clarify the differences in scope, results, recovery, and cost.

What Each Procedure Does

Deep Plane Facelift

The deep plane facelift is the most comprehensive facial rejuvenation technique. It releases and repositions the SMAS — the layer of muscle and connective tissue beneath the skin — addressing the entire midface and lower face. It corrects jowling, deep nasolabial folds, midface descent, and loss of jawline definition by addressing the structural cause of these changes.

When combined with a neck lift, it provides complete lower face and neck rejuvenation in a single session.

Mini Facelift (Optimum LIFT)

The Optimum LIFT is a mini facelift that uses a shorter incision and a more targeted approach. It addresses the lower face primarily — early jowling, mild jawline softening, and lower face laxity — without the full extent of dissection and repositioning involved in a deep plane procedure.

At Niagara Plastic Surgery Centre, the Optimum LIFT is a proprietary technique offered exclusively by Dr. Huq — the only provider in Ontario.

Comparing the Two

Scope of Correction

The deep plane facelift addresses both the midface and the lower face, repositioning the deeper structures across a larger area. It is designed for faces that have undergone significant structural change.

The mini facelift targets the lower face, addressing early descent with a less extensive approach. It is designed for faces where the aging is real but has not yet progressed to the point where a full deep plane procedure is necessary.

Recovery Time

Deep plane facelift recovery requires approximately two weeks before most patients feel comfortable in public. The first week involves significant swelling and bruising.

Mini facelift recovery is typically shorter — most patients take seven to ten days off and feel comfortable returning to their routine more quickly. Swelling and bruising tend to be less extensive.

How Long Results Last

Deep plane facelift results typically last 10 to 15 years because the underlying structures have been repositioned.

Mini facelift results have a shorter longevity because the procedure is less extensive. The exact duration depends on the patient’s anatomy, skin quality, and lifestyle, but it is generally shorter than a full deep plane result.

Cost

At NPSC, a deep plane facelift start at $20,000 (all-inclusive). The Optimum LIFT ranges from $12,000 to $20,000 (all-inclusive). Both quotes cover the surgeon’s fee, facility fee, anesthesia, and all follow-up appointments. Adjuvant procedures (fat grafting, liposuction, lip lift, buccal fat removal) carry an additional charge for each.

Anesthesia

Both procedures can be performed under local anesthesia or TIVA (twilight sedation) at NPSC. Dr. Huq is a published authority on local anesthesia in plastic surgery, and many patients in both categories choose this option for a smoother recovery.

How to Know Which Is Right for You

The decision is not about preference — it is about anatomy. Here is a general guide:

The Optimum LIFT (mini facelift) may be right if: You are experiencing early to moderate changes — a softening jawline, mild jowling, early lower face laxity. You want visible improvement but your aging has not progressed to deep nasolabial folds or significant midface descent. You value shorter recovery. You are typically between 38 and 55 (though anatomy is the deciding factor, not age).

The deep plane facelift may be right if: You are experiencing moderate to significant aging — pronounced jowling, deep nasolabial folds, midface descent, loss of jawline definition. Fillers and Botox are no longer delivering meaningful results. You want the most comprehensive and longest-lasting correction available. You are typically between 45 and 70.

If you are not sure: That is exactly what a consultation is for. Dr. Huq evaluates every patient individually and will recommend the procedure that produces the best result for your anatomy. If he believes a mini facelift is sufficient, he will say so. If he believes a deep plane approach is necessary, he will explain why.

A Note on “Mini Facelifts” from Other Practices

The term “mini facelift” is used broadly in the industry, and not all mini facelifts are the same. Some practices use the term for very limited procedures that offer minimal improvement. Others use it as a marketing entry point for patients who ultimately need a full facelift.

The Optimum LIFT at NPSC is a defined technique — not a marketing term. It is designed for a specific stage of aging and produces consistent, natural results within its scope. Dr. Huq will not recommend it for patients who need a deep plane facelift, and he will not recommend a deep plane facelift for patients who can achieve excellent results with the Optimum LIFT.
